Richard wants to use the money to try to get the word out about the app, guerrilla marketing and meetups. Pivoting is out of the question and Erlich wants everyone to support Richard’s kamikaze flight into the side of a mountain. What becomes clear (to the audience, if not the characters) is that their big, coming out, huge money commercial should’ve talked about what Pied Piper actually does rather than rehashing meaningless buzzwords over equally meaningless imagery.īack at the incubator Richard breaks the news to the Pied Piper team about how bad things really are, causing some of the team members to quit immediately. What’s really amazing about this scene is how easily Richard interacts with strangers, explaining the tech and (as he’s done all season) really showing how much he’s grown since Season 1, into maybe not the man he wanted to be, but definitely into something more than he was. He’s able to explain how it works over a lot of time and pizza. Richard freaks out and bursts into the focus group, taking over and becoming a surprisingly decent teacher.

Richard only beta tested the app on engineers so only engineers understand how to use it and how it works. It’s discovered that the layperson doesn’t understand how to use the platform. Most of the people are apparently “totally freaked out” which I guess means something different in Southern California, because I get “totally freaked out” thinking about dark matter or life after death but I don’t think I’ve ever been “totally freaked out” by an app on my phone. Monica puts together a focus group to figure out what went wrong with the app and we see the return of the same robotically friendly focus group leader who uncovered just how much everyone hated Nucleus. Everyone gathers around a screen to watch the app hit 500,000 users as it happens and it happens. “Lie” becomes Gilfoyle’s catch phrase, acting as a one man Greek chorus following around Jared, chanting premonitions of doom. Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) corners Jared by the buffet table and uses his amazing satanic powers (literally) to act as a human lie detector slicing through every front Jared puts up while trying to keep the horrible, horrible truth a secret. He brings it up again during the episode, possibly hinting towards it having something to do with the finale? Currently Richard and Jared (Zach Woods) are the only two who know how bad things really are, and so are the only two freaking out.ĭanesh (Kumail Nanjiani) does his phony, forced, suave guy impression to an incredibly bored woman, and that works out how you’d imagine.

Neo-classical, feel good music swells in the background. The ep opens with a bizarre, beautiful, bland, high definition montage of stock footage while a woman delivers what’s supposed to be an inspiring speech about sharing and tables.
